Doll's Eye View: Golden Globes '14 Red Carpet

Yup. Our girls were there on the red carpet for the Golden Globes on Sunday. A few even managed to upstage a few of the stars. Here, take a look!!!

Our favorite gown of the night: Lupita Nyong'O in a red hot, sizzling Ralph Lauren.

We loved the voluptuousness of Sophia Vergana in Zac Posen.

And of course, we thought Hayden Panettiere's Tom Ford dress was ever so chic. We loved the way she accented the halter neckline with the addition of a broach.
Sometimes simple make a really big statement, especially when it's cut from aqua blue crepe.
Okay, so this was not everyone's favorite and we know not everyone can wear this, but for an at home formal dinner party, nothing beats the casual chic of this look. We would have preferred a better blouse, perhaps!

Next up: The guys are back. Stay tuned because the European menswear collections for Fall/Winter 2014-15 are going on right now. We'll have the first installment (UK and Italy) coming up within a day!

    1. For all of my posts, I make complete garments which close at the back or side. Sometimes I make many drafts until I'm satisfied with the results AND can explain it to the viewers. Over the last 6 months, I've been taking a bit more time than usual to better "finish" the garments. For the special events and fashion week clothes, I have time constraints so that the garments remain relevant. So sometimes I take shortcuts. Here is the secret: 1) Easy silhouettes. There are lots of clothes I would love to do but don't have time to work out the details quickly. Also, the point is to show people where to find inspiration and how to translate it using simple patterns & techniques. If you look closely, you'll notice I used the strapless evening sheath in my previous post as the base for the red dress. The 1 pc corset is used for 2 other looks. 2) Over the course of the last year, many of the basic patterns have already been drafted (and tested). Sewing for a 12" doll is fast. I use a machine for straight seams and hand stitch darts & details. 3) I use Velcro for fastening and I usually don't line those special event dresses. The exception was the cape on the red Globes dress because it would not have photographed well otherwise. 4) Sometimes I can recycle or modify what I've already made, which gives me head start. However, since it's my first time working with FR dolls, I did have to make new camisoles because their bodies are so different than Barbie's. I lost a lot of time because it is not simple making camisoles for those tiny wasp waists and big busts. So the black ball gown top required lots of hand stitching to control the fit. I softly pleated the skirt and added it to the camisole top with a single seam in the back. The Julia Roberts dress is a 1 pc corset, a shirt which I made before and a slim black skirt with a godet (large triangle of fabric) introduced below the hips at the center seam in the back. The Tom Ford dress consists of three pieces of fabric. I used black knit triangle stitched to a black twist tie for the bodice. Attached to it was a rectangle of white, over which another rectangle of black knit was draped and hand stitched in place. If you use knit, it slides right off her body.

I've been sewing (real) clothes since I was a teenager and can make myself something in the morning to wear out that same night. Once I develop the pattern for the doll, the rest goes fast.

I usually don't show back views unless there interest at the back, because my posts are already very long. However, where I can, I'll try to show more back views in the coming year.

    1. Thank you. Trying to keep things current, I give myself 48 hours or less to do this. It's like a "pop quiz." Always a challenge, but always a lot of fun.

  4. I am fairly new to your site. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. I visit everyday because there is always something new you have added. Yesterday I voted your site as the best in the Top 100 ?? I was going to vote again for you today but I am not allowed on the site. I guess you can only vote once.

I want to thank you for the patterns. I am not experienced enough to use them. But it is something for me to aspire to.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words. I try keep things here fresh, current and rolling along just like a "regular" fashion blog. This year, I've even brought in "new models" (Fashion Royalty dolls) for diversity.

I'm working on a way to make things a bit easier for those of you with no experience to better follow along. As soon as I can get it in place, I'll make an announcement.

In the meantime, thank you for your support. (Actually you can vote once every 31 days).
