When Puppets Rock the Catwalk...

While the girls are busy finishing up after a brief stint at New York fashion week, we received news from our overseas crew about a eye popping event in the Italian fashion capital of Milan. Instead of an in-person catwalk show, Moschino, a house known for its edgy and tongue-in-cheek fashions, presented their Spring Summer 2021 collection on puppets instead of humans! Some 40 looks were "walked" by a cabine of 30-inch (75cm) puppets within a setting resembling the hush interiors of an haute couture salon. When Jeremy Scott, the American born, artistic director of the Italian house realized an in-person show would be a challenge during an ever persistent pandemic, he decided to take a more whimsical route by staging a puppet show instead. “The best thing I could do for everyone who is stressed about the election, the pandemic, social unrest, and the future was to give the gift of fantasy and take us away from all of it for a few minutes; let us enjoy this little fashion world of ours,” Scott explained in a recent interview. Inspired by Dior's iconic "Theatre de la Mode," the services of Jim Henson's "Creature Shop" (the artists responsible for the renowned Muppets) were retained. They created "models' fashioned after the designer's favorite girls and an assortment of other figurines representing prominent editors seated in the front row. As for the clothes themselves, each one is an exact replica of a full scale garment designed for humans. Every fabric, every accessory, every detail of the life size garments had to be scaled down to fit the bodies of the marionettes.

In an interview (click on the link to view) with CNN Style, Jeremy Scott provides a glimpse behind the scenes and describes what it was like to bring his puppet show to life.

Though me and the girls have not yet begun our fashion reports for the Spring/Summer 2021 season, we all agreed to share this show with our friends immediately. Inasmuch as these miniature clothes are already shown on half-scale dolls, I have decided to let you savor them as presented in lieu of replicating any of them myself. So sit back, relax, pour yourself a glass of champagne or a cup of tea and enjoy a puppet show like you've never seen before. Afterwards, you can take your time and peruse each outfit as I have posted all of the still photos below.

We'll be back shortly with a Doll's Eye View of New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021.

    1. Isn't it though!!! Between the Dior couture show six months ago and this puppet show, those of us doll folks have really been spoiled this year!

  2. Excellent, of course I wanted to see the audience and what they were wearing also. Did I count only 1 pair of slacks, or were they work out pants under a tutu? LOTS of construction, banding, piecing details...hmmmm.Thanks for sharing, Sandi

    1. Oh Sandi, this was just way too much fun not to share. OK, so the puppets are bigger than our dolls, the fact that there was a miniature collection created for the purposes of selling clothes to humans makes it all the more fun. I think I only saw the one pair of pants. I think it was due to the designer paying tribute to the world of couture (which traditionally doesn't have much in the way of trousers). Glad you enjoyed this post.

  3. This was such wonderful entertainment. We really never grow up but as grown-ups we express it in a different way. I think April's sewing skills excel in comparison

    1. Thank you, Olympia for your very kind words. I think the problem with the fit in this case, has to do with the puppet bodies. Because their legs look very close to those of my Fashion Royal dolls, I had originally assumed they were the same scale. I have a sneaking feeling the bodies are a bit rigid and perhaps a tad bit off in the proportions around the waist area. I think the clothes are very well made...perhaps, in a few cases too well made which might be why certain models look a bit stiff. But anyway, this is so much fun.

A feast for the eyes and heart :)))
      Thank you very much :-)

I totally agree, Olla. This really was a feast for the eyes and the child in all of us. How much fun to see a puppet dressed in designer clothes that prances down the runway in front of other puppets posing as fashion editors. It's the ultimate dolly fantasy! So happy you enjoyed this. Big hugs.

  5. We have been very spoiled this year....between the Dior Couture miniatures and this puppet show! It's interesting to see how, in this time of Covid19, designers have been inspired by Dior's Theatre de la Mode figurines as an alternative for delivering a fashion show. Oh yes, the audience is divine! I don't think I would have thought to have added them in. Hopefully, they will keep this collection in their archives to serve for a special exhibition in the future. Glad you enjoyed this post! Big hugs.

Because unfortunately a lot of people take a dim view of doll collectors, as if it should just be for children. I am really happy to see this collection. Now April, let's see how this collection inspires you for new creations.

I agree...this is such a great idea to see a major design house use the world of miniatures to show off their collection. I do think people have more respect for dolls as collectables when there is an association with real world fashion. The Council of American Fashion Designers staged a competition to design for Barbie when Mattel first launched its Model Muse (Little Black Dress) Barbies back in 2009. I think that helped draw new collectors to the world of dolls. In any case, after our fashion reports are over, I will probably take another long look at these little creations with an eye as to what I might want to replicate. Merci, Shasarignis pour ton amitie. Bisous

  8. I haven't been catching up with blogs these past couple of weeks, so I've missed a lot of content. I do love this idea of the puppet show, and they even made the audience members. Anna Wintour is the easiest one to identify, but probably because of her iconic hair.
When it comes to the fashions, my favourite is the black dress with the train and the sculptured elbow pieces. The pastel colors look a bit Marie Antoinette inspired to me.

    1. So true, the Anna Wintour puppet is the easiest to identify. I suppose if I were still attending fashion weeks in person, I would know who the others are. I'll admit, I LOVE the puppet fashion show perhaps more than the clothes. There are a few items to my liking, though. Thanks MC for stopping by.

    1. Oh Aya, thank you so much for your kind words. But you must know, these are not my creations. I was simply sharing an amazing "fashion show" of puppets. Thank you for stopping by.

Thank you for your lovely comment. First of all, welcome to my blog. And yes, the idea of creating a fashion show for humans using dolls is pure genius. The dolls are beautiful and the clothes are super fun.
